Best Places to Watch the Big Game Bash Downtown Las Vegas

The Big Game will be here before you know it. Even if you don’t know who you’ll be rooting for yet, it’s never too early to start your game day watch party planning! It’s considered the biggest sporting event in North America and should be considered its own holiday. In 2020, the game is taking place in Miami, Florida on Sunday, February 2nd at the Hard Rock Stadium.

Where to Watch the Big Game?

If you aren’t able to make it in person to see and experience this massive event, then chances are you’re going to at least make plans to watch it. The Plaza Hotel & Casino in Downtown Las Vegas is hosting the Big Game Viewing Party where you will find frenzied fans, a delicious buffet, and of course, an open bar.

Get a Room

deluxe plaza hotel room

Amid the Big Game festivities, commercials, and performances, it’s also worth noting that Big Game Sunday is one of the biggest drinking days of the year. Have you ever thought of a hotel room as an alternative to drinking and driving?

The cost of a DUI can be $1,000’s of dollars and leave a permanent mark on your driving record. Taxis and ridesharing apps might be convenient, but they can also be expensive and time-consuming alternatives to drinking and driving. Drivers are also very cautious about accepting fares from intoxicated passengers.

Our hotel rooms are oftentimes less expensive than a round-trip ride and are a short walk from all the action. Book your downtown hotel room at The Plaza Hotel early – rooms tend to run out fast for this special event.

The William Hill Race & Sportsbook Bar

Located on the casino floor of the Plaza Hotel is the William Hill Race & Sportsbook, the perfect place to watch the biggest game of the year. Place your bets and enjoy an array of beer, wine, and cocktail choices at this cozy sports bar.

The best part is, you’re located near exciting casino gaming action — a perfect way to spend halftime if you don’t care to watch the show.

The Halftime Show

However, if you do want to watch the show you can enjoy watching this year’s performers from our viewing party. Grab yourself a drink, sit back, relax and be entertained.

After the Big Game

After the game, Downtown Las Vegas has several attractions to keep the party going well into the night.

Las Vegas Days Rodeo

Las Vegas Rodeo

When you think of Las Vegas, you might think of all the lights, clubs, and fantastic shows. While Las Vegas does have a lot to offer in the way of nighttime entertainment, the city knows how to party during the day too – especially with Las Vegas rodeos!

The city of Las Vegas got its start as part of the Wild West, and Las Vegas Days (formerly known as Helldorado Days) celebrates the spirit of the Wild West with a Las Vegas rodeo and cowboy themed event!

On May 10th and 11th you can grab your favorite pair of boots, blue jeans, and a cowboy hat and head to the all-new Core Arena where there will be:

  • Bull riding
  • Barrel racing
  • Team roping
  • Tie-down roping
  • Steer wrestling
  • Saddle bronc riding
  • And bareback riding

Admission to enjoy the event is free and there will be a parade held on Saturday, May 11th.

History of the Las Vegas Days

The Las Vegas Helldorado event began in 1934 when Arizona carnival barker Clyde Zerby saw an opportunity with the thousands of visitors to the Hoover Dam site.

The first Helldorado was a rowdy affair that took the flavor of the Old West to the next level, celebrating everything wild about the wild west.

In 1935, Las Vegas was a booming town, and Fremont Street was exploding with gambling halls, hotels, and restaurants. City leaders knew the boom could end and Las Vegas could wind up a ghost town.

In comes the Helldorado Days festival to provide a sense of community spirit that would entice Dam workers and their families to stay in Southern Nevada.

As Las Vegas grew, so did Helldorado Days. Several of the salacious events were replaced with family-friendly entertainment including:

  • Award-winning marching bands
  • Best Float awards
  • A rodeo that drew superstars and a national audience
  • A beauty contest
  • And more!

The festival inspired a sense of community among long-time residents and for newcomers, it renewed interest in our history and the spirit of our past.

The Plaza Hotel & Casino Adds Third 21-Story Mural

anthropomorphic wolf wearing a las vegas T-shirt The Plaza Hotel & Casino has added a third mural to its downtown Las Vegas display. This mural was done by Faile, and positioned on the north tower at 21 stories high. The mural is a big milestone for Faile, as it is the largest they have ever created. About Faile Faile, started in 1999, is an artistic collaboration hailing from Brooklyn, New York. Artists Patrick McNeill and Patrick Miller formed together to make the cohesive artistic unit. The name “Faile” was created for the duo because it is an anagram of their first project titled “A Life”. Their work can be described as a combination of “high” and “low” culture and the duo likes to think outside the box, using many different materials in their work. The current murals on The Plaza are done by Shepard Fairey and D*Face. (below) shepard fairey plaza mural downtown las vegas Dface in las vegas The installation by Faile might be the most prominently positioned mural on The Plaza Hotel & Casino north tower because it will overlook the busy I-15 freeway and have about 200,000 cars driving past it every day. The mural is sure to make The Plaza stand out amongst the rest of the downtown hotels and casinos. Jonathon Jossel, CEO of the Plaza, felt that it was a vital part of downtown Las Vegas culture to have a diversified art installation available for the public to see. What makes the murals at The Plaza especially unique is that you don’t even have to go inside to view them. They will attract your attention from the freeway or while you are walking towards downtown. Jossel says he is proud to have the murals call The Plaza their home. Patrick McNeil of Faile stated that when they were offered the opportunity to paint The Plaza, they thought of the famous painting of Dogs Playing Poker by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, which can be reflected in the mural which in its progress appears to be a dog holding a hand of cards. McNeil also said he was thrilled to be a part of the iconic history of The Plaza, which has been a central hub for artists and art lovers of all kind. “The Man” by The Killers filmed at The Plaza

music video location plaza hotel casino the killers Having formed their band in Las Vegas, The Killers are well known in the Las Vegas music scene for their iconic rock sound and Vegas subject manner. Their new album being released on September 22, 2017, “Wonderful Wonderful” brings Plaza Hotel & Casino into the spotlight with them. This will be The Killers’ fifth album and it’s already looking like it will be a great success. the man by the killers music video The music video for the first single off the album is “The Man” and it was filmed almost exclusively at The Plaza. The video features shots of The Plaza lights and valet, as well as the showroom and casino. the plaza valet killers music video In the video, you can see lead singer of The Killers, Brandon Flowers, living large in Las Vegas amongst showgirls and high roller players in the casino (one of which is played by former Mayor Oscar Goodman.)

About The Killers

The Killers were formed in Las Vegas in 2001 and are familiar with the downtown Las Vegas scene. They even played as headliners at the first Life Is Beautiful festival in 2013. Since The Plaza has been a staple of downtown Las Vegas since the 1970’s, it was an obvious location choice for The Killers to film a music video with a classic old Vegas feel to it. plaza events center music video shoot In the beginning of the video you can see the camera panning to the entrance of The Plaza where you will see the hotel’s marquee letters and valet drive up. The whole music video is an ode to Las Vegas living. Classic scenes of Las Vegas are pictured throughout the video like members of the band having fun gambling in The Plaza Hotel & Casino and Brandon Flowers singing on stage surrounded by beautiful Las Vegas showgirls in The Plaza Showroom. the killers gambling at the plaza

Music History and The Plaza Hotel Casino

The Plaza’s music scene has been growing over the past few years. During Life Is Beautiful at the end of September, The Plaza will even hold a private MGMT concert for festival goers staying at the hotel. The hotel and casino has become a cultural hub for the artistic vibe of downtown Las Vegas. With its classic old Vegas feel mixed with modernism and artistic design, The Plaza is a great visual setting for bands and artists to shoot their music videos. The Plaza combines the best of both worlds, the old and the new. The fifth album from The Killers, “Wonderful Wonderful”, is being released towards the end of September 2017. To gather ideas for the album the band members
  • Brandon Flowers (lead vocals)
  • Dave Keuning (lead guitar)
  • Mark Stoermer (bass)
  • Ronnie Vanucci, Jr. (drums)
began working at their own Battle Born studios as well as renting houses in San Diego and Joshua National Tree Park. Brainstorming together for the album is an integral part of The Killers creative process. The album was recorded with Jackknife Lee, who was recommended to them by U2, in his private studio in California as well as at National Southwestern Recording Studios in Las Vegas. The album features guest artists like Mark Knopfler from Dire Straights and Australian musician Alex Cameron. “Wonderful Wonderful” has already received noteworthy praise. Mark Savage from BBC News referred to the album as The Killers most vital album since “Sam’s Town”, which was released in 2006. Q Magazine called it a “glossy indie-pop album with sonics as slick and glistening as a brand-new Vegas skyscraper”. The album has three singles, “The Man”, “Run for Cover” and “Wonderful Wonderful”. However, “The Man”, which was released on June 14, 2017 has definitely earned the most play time on the radio and has woven its way into fans hearts as one of The Killers big hits and a staple song of the summer. The Killers refer to the song as “funkier than anything we’ve ever done before”. With its synth liftoff, backup choir, the overdubs, and the unique bass, the song is different than any of the band’s previous hits. There is speculation about what the song means among fans. Some say that “The Man” is an ode to Brandon Flowers’ ego and others say the song is him making fun of himself and his fame. The intentionally overdone glitzy music video plays well into the second concept that The Killers are in on the joke of the egotistical aspect of the song. On the band’s Twitter profile they posted a photo of Brandon Flowers in front of The Plaza with the caption “Who’s the man?” The Killers had a fun time making their music video at The Plaza and many other stars have enjoyed filming at the hotel and casino over the years. Many movies such as Back to the Future II, Casino, Girl Next Door, and even The Hangover have been shot at The Plaza.
