Best Places to Watch the Big Game Bash Downtown Las Vegas

The Big Game will be here before you know it. Even if you don’t know who you’ll be rooting for yet, it’s never too early to start your game day watch party planning! In 2020, the game is taking place in Miami, Florida on Sunday, February 2nd at the Hard Rock Stadium.

Get a Room

deluxe plaza hotel room

Amid the Big Game festivities, commercials, and performances, it’s also worth noting that Big Game Sunday is one of the biggest drinking days of the year. Have you ever thought of a hotel room as an alternative to drinking and driving?

The cost of a DUI can be $1,000’s of dollars and leave a permanent mark on your driving record. Taxis and ridesharing apps might be convenient, but they can also be expensive and time-consuming alternatives to drinking and driving. Drivers are also very cautious about accepting fares from intoxicated passengers.

Our hotel rooms are oftentimes less expensive than a round-trip ride and are a short walk from all the action. Book your downtown hotel room at The Plaza Hotel early – rooms tend to run out fast for this special event.

The William Hill Race & Sportsbook Bar

Located on the casino floor of the Plaza Hotel is the William Hill Race & Sportsbook, the perfect place to watch the biggest game of the year. Place your bets and enjoy an array of beer, wine, and cocktail choices at this cozy sports bar.

The best part is, you’re located near exciting casino gaming action — a perfect way to spend halftime if you don’t care to watch the show.

The Halftime Show

However, if you do want to watch the show you can enjoy watching this year’s performers from our viewing party. Grab yourself a drink, sit back, relax and be entertained.

After the Big Game

After the game, Downtown Las Vegas has several attractions to keep the party going well into the night.

Las Vegas Days Rodeo

Las Vegas Rodeo

When you think of Las Vegas, you might think of all the lights, clubs, and fantastic shows. While Las Vegas does have a lot to offer in the way of nighttime entertainment, the city knows how to party during the day too – especially with Las Vegas rodeos!

The city of Las Vegas got its start as part of the Wild West, and Las Vegas Days (formerly known as Helldorado Days) celebrates the spirit of the Wild West with a Las Vegas rodeo and cowboy themed event!

On May 10th and 11th you can grab your favorite pair of boots, blue jeans, and a cowboy hat and head to the all-new Core Arena where there will be:

  • Bull riding
  • Barrel racing
  • Team roping
  • Tie-down roping
  • Steer wrestling
  • Saddle bronc riding
  • And bareback riding

Admission to enjoy the event is free and there will be a parade held on Saturday, May 11th.

History of the Las Vegas Days

The Las Vegas Helldorado event began in 1934 when Arizona carnival barker Clyde Zerby saw an opportunity with the thousands of visitors to the Hoover Dam site.

The first Helldorado was a rowdy affair that took the flavor of the Old West to the next level, celebrating everything wild about the wild west.

In 1935, Las Vegas was a booming town, and Fremont Street was exploding with gambling halls, hotels, and restaurants. City leaders knew the boom could end and Las Vegas could wind up a ghost town.

In comes the Helldorado Days festival to provide a sense of community spirit that would entice Dam workers and their families to stay in Southern Nevada.

As Las Vegas grew, so did Helldorado Days. Several of the salacious events were replaced with family-friendly entertainment including:

  • Award-winning marching bands
  • Best Float awards
  • A rodeo that drew superstars and a national audience
  • A beauty contest
  • And more!

The festival inspired a sense of community among long-time residents and for newcomers, it renewed interest in our history and the spirit of our past.

The Plaza Hotel & Casino Adds Third 21-Story Mural

anthropomorphic wolf wearing a las vegas T-shirt The Plaza Hotel & Casino has added a third mural to its downtown Las Vegas display. This mural was done by Faile, and positioned on the north tower at 21 stories high. The mural is a big milestone for Faile, as it is the largest they have ever created. About Faile Faile, started in 1999, is an artistic collaboration hailing from Brooklyn, New York. Artists Patrick McNeill and Patrick Miller formed together to make the cohesive artistic unit. The name “Faile” was created for the duo because it is an anagram of their first project titled “A Life”. Their work can be described as a combination of “high” and “low” culture and the duo likes to think outside the box, using many different materials in their work. The current murals on The Plaza are done by Shepard Fairey and D*Face. (below) shepard fairey plaza mural downtown las vegas Dface in las vegas The installation by Faile might be the most prominently positioned mural on The Plaza Hotel & Casino north tower because it will overlook the busy I-15 freeway and have about 200,000 cars driving past it every day. The mural is sure to make The Plaza stand out amongst the rest of the downtown hotels and casinos. Jonathon Jossel, CEO of the Plaza, felt that it was a vital part of downtown Las Vegas culture to have a diversified art installation available for the public to see. What makes the murals at The Plaza especially unique is that you don’t even have to go inside to view them. They will attract your attention from the freeway or while you are walking towards downtown. Jossel says he is proud to have the murals call The Plaza their home. Patrick McNeil of Faile stated that when they were offered the opportunity to paint The Plaza, they thought of the famous painting of Dogs Playing Poker by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, which can be reflected in the mural which in its progress appears to be a dog holding a hand of cards. McNeil also said he was thrilled to be a part of the iconic history of The Plaza, which has been a central hub for artists and art lovers of all kind. “The Man” by The Killers filmed at The Plaza

music video location plaza hotel casino the killers Having formed their band in Las Vegas, The Killers are well known in the Las Vegas music scene for their iconic rock sound and Vegas subject manner. Their new album being released on September 22, 2017, “Wonderful Wonderful” brings Plaza Hotel & Casino into the spotlight with them. This will be The Killers’ fifth album and it’s already looking like it will be a great success. the man by the killers music video The music video for the first single off the album is “The Man” and it was filmed almost exclusively at The Plaza. The video features shots of The Plaza lights and valet, as well as the showroom and casino. the plaza valet killers music video In the video, you can see lead singer of The Killers, Brandon Flowers, living large in Las Vegas amongst showgirls and high roller players in the casino (one of which is played by former Mayor Oscar Goodman.)

About The Killers

The Killers were formed in Las Vegas in 2001 and are familiar with the downtown Las Vegas scene. They even played as headliners at the first Life Is Beautiful festival in 2013. Since The Plaza has been a staple of downtown Las Vegas since the 1970’s, it was an obvious location choice for The Killers to film a music video with a classic old Vegas feel to it. plaza events center music video shoot In the beginning of the video you can see the camera panning to the entrance of The Plaza where you will see the hotel’s marquee letters and valet drive up. The whole music video is an ode to Las Vegas living. Classic scenes of Las Vegas are pictured throughout the video like members of the band having fun gambling in The Plaza Hotel & Casino and Brandon Flowers singing on stage surrounded by beautiful Las Vegas showgirls in The Plaza Showroom. the killers gambling at the plaza

Music History and The Plaza Hotel Casino

The Plaza’s music scene has been growing over the past few years. During Life Is Beautiful at the end of September, The Plaza will even hold a private MGMT concert for festival goers staying at the hotel. The hotel and casino has become a cultural hub for the artistic vibe of downtown Las Vegas. With its classic old Vegas feel mixed with modernism and artistic design, The Plaza is a great visual setting for bands and artists to shoot their music videos. The Plaza combines the best of both worlds, the old and the new. The fifth album from The Killers, “Wonderful Wonderful”, is being released towards the end of September 2017. To gather ideas for the album the band members
  • Brandon Flowers (lead vocals)
  • Dave Keuning (lead guitar)
  • Mark Stoermer (bass)
  • Ronnie Vanucci, Jr. (drums)
began working at their own Battle Born studios as well as renting houses in San Diego and Joshua National Tree Park. Brainstorming together for the album is an integral part of The Killers creative process. The album was recorded with Jackknife Lee, who was recommended to them by U2, in his private studio in California as well as at National Southwestern Recording Studios in Las Vegas. The album features guest artists like Mark Knopfler from Dire Straights and Australian musician Alex Cameron. “Wonderful Wonderful” has already received noteworthy praise. Mark Savage from BBC News referred to the album as The Killers most vital album since “Sam’s Town”, which was released in 2006. Q Magazine called it a “glossy indie-pop album with sonics as slick and glistening as a brand-new Vegas skyscraper”. The album has three singles, “The Man”, “Run for Cover” and “Wonderful Wonderful”. However, “The Man”, which was released on June 14, 2017 has definitely earned the most play time on the radio and has woven its way into fans hearts as one of The Killers big hits and a staple song of the summer. The Killers refer to the song as “funkier than anything we’ve ever done before”. With its synth liftoff, backup choir, the overdubs, and the unique bass, the song is different than any of the band’s previous hits. There is speculation about what the song means among fans. Some say that “The Man” is an ode to Brandon Flowers’ ego and others say the song is him making fun of himself and his fame. The intentionally overdone glitzy music video plays well into the second concept that The Killers are in on the joke of the egotistical aspect of the song. On the band’s Twitter profile they posted a photo of Brandon Flowers in front of The Plaza with the caption “Who’s the man?” The Killers had a fun time making their music video at The Plaza and many other stars have enjoyed filming at the hotel and casino over the years. Many movies such as Back to the Future II, Casino, Girl Next Door, and even The Hangover have been shot at The Plaza. How to Have a Great Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day Dinner

Mother’s Day is the one time of year we get to truly say thank you to our moms and show them how much they mean to us. Our mothers have done so much for us. They’ve done our laundry, made our beds, tucked us in at night, and always made sure that we didn’t go hungry. Show your mom how special she is this Mother’s Day by planning out the whole day full of surprises for her.

Mother’s Day Breakfast

Moms rarely get to sleep in late, so let her sleep in and treat her to breakfast in bed. You can serve up a traditional breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, and pancakes with coffee and orange juice. She’ll love the gesture and enjoy the opportunity to stay in bed. This is also the perfect time to present her with a Mother’s Day card filled with words of your love and gratitude for her.

A Little Bit of Pampering

All moms deserve a little extra tender loving care. Take your mom to get her nails and hair done, get a massage, or for a spa day. She deserves the opportunity to relax and will appreciate being pampered. Most moms don’t get enough self-care, so remind her that she is important and needs to take some time for herself.

Something Fun

After she’s feeling refreshed from her pampering, take mom out for a little bit of fun. This can be shopping, a walk in the park, a movie, or even going to a nice museum. Whatever you think your mom will enjoy. Remember that the day is about her to take her and do something she’ll love.

There are plenty of options to choose from in Downtown Las Vegas. The Container Park is a great destination for shopping and walking around. You can check out The Mob Museum or the Neon Museum to take in the history of Las Vegas. If your mom enjoys the pool, take her to the rooftop pool at The Plaza for some fun in the sun.

Mother’s Day Dinner

Give back to your mom this Mother’s Day by treating her to a lovely night out with some delicious food. Every mother knows that the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach, which is why we’re serving up a special Mother’s Day dinner at Oscar’s Steakhouse at the Plaza Hotel & Casino.

Say “thank you” to mom by taking her out for a delightful meal surrounded by the people she loves the most. Moms are always cooking up wonderful meals for family and friends, but on Mother’s Day, you can tell her that we’ll handle the cooking at Oscar’s.

We’ve put together a special menu with a luxurious meal just for mom. The meal starts with her choice of Tomato and Burrata salad or Truffle Risotto and for the entrée special she’ll be served Crispy Branzino.

No matter how you end up celebrating the day, remember to give mom your love and remind her that you’re thankful for all she’s done for you.

Don’t Miss The Scintas

The Scintas One of the longest running shows in Vegas, The Scintas, provides guests with a night full of entertainment. Brothers Frankie and Joe Scinta dazzle the audience along with “honorary Scintas” Peter O’Donnell and Janien Valentine. The show is full of music, comedy, and striking impressions. During the show, every audience member is invited to join the cast at Oscar’s steakhouse at the Plaza for a nightcap after the show, bringing back the true feeling of “Vintage Vegas”.
The show has been so popular that it was extended through the end of 2017 at the Plaza Hotel & Casino. Audience members love the authenticity of the show and Frankie says that no show is ever the same because they interact with the audience and cater the performance to the people who are there. The Scintas have performed at many venues in Las Vegas since 2000, but they have formed a connection with the Plaza and are proud to call it the current home of their show. Both The Plaza and The Scintas work to bring alive the feeling of Old Vegas, reminiscent of the Rat Pack era. The last date of the show at the Plaza Hotel & Casino will be on New Year’s Eve, December 31st, 2017. The remainder of the schedule can be found online. For guests looking for a special experience, tickets can be purchased which includes a three-course meal at Oscar’s Steakhouse, referred to by Frankie as “one of the best steaks in Vegas”. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this iconic show in Plaza’s vintage showroom. More Info about The Scintas

Shepard Fairey Mural

Shepard Fairey, completed his masterpiece, “Cultivate Harmony”, on the Plaza Hotel in February 2017. Fairey is known for the iconic 2008 “Hope” poster from Former President Barrack Obama’s initial White House run. Fairey’s piece reminds us that peace and harmony are the only way to maintain what sustains us. Fairey is one of the most recognized street artists of our generation and the Plaza Hotel Casino is proud to be home to one of his latest art installments. shepard fairey plaza mural downtown las vegas

D* Face Plaza Mural

Shepard Fairey isn’t the only renowned artist transforming the Plaza Hotel Casino. D*Face Unveils Latest Las Vegas Downtown Art

If you look on the side of the Plaza Hotel & Casino, you may see something that looks like it was pulled from a horror or suspense comic book. Dface in las vegas The latest piece of art to join the Downtown Las Vegas area is a large mural created by D*Face, an English multimedia street artist known for his sold-out galleries and collaboration with the world’s top music artists. His style can be considered a modern twist on retro comics and skeletons are a frequent staple of his work. D*Face’s latest masterpiece is his tallest and widest mural ever created. Overlooking the pool deck of the Plaza Hotel & Casino, D*Face created a chilling scene reminiscent of old horror comics with a retro feel. The mural, lacking any captions or words, encourages viewers to interpret the scene, which includes a frightened young blonde woman with big blue eyes, a menacing skeletal hand, and a slowly opening door. The artwork stretches across three different parts of the Plaza Hotel & Casino, creating a depth effect for viewers. Completing the mural was a challenge that D*Face relished. It pushed him to overcome his fear of heights and work within the uneven architecture of the Plaza Hotel to create something unique. D*Face was lifted on a platform with a rope pull system to finish the mural. D*Face masterfully used the architecture and placement of the mural to create shadows that extend the boundaries of the mural and transform it from a two-dimensional piece of art to a surreal 3-D mural that comes alive as the sun sets.
D*Face’s mural joins Shepard Fairey’s colossal mural on the Plaza Hotel & Casino in Downtown Las Vegas.

About D*Face

“D*Face”, a.k.a. Dean Stockton is an English multimedia street artist known for using mediums like spray paint, stickers, posters, and stencils to create beautiful modern pieces of street art. He started creating his unique and recognizable characters one day while sitting in the office trying to pass the time. His life was forever changed as his artistic passion continued to grow and he decided to pursue his art as his life’s work. D*Face has been of the most influential artists in the Downtown Las Vegas art scene, alongside Shepard Fairey, Zio Ziegler, Chor Boogie, Ruben Sanchez, and more. His retro feeling art reminiscent of old comic books contributes to the classic “Old Vegas” vibe that has become a staple of the Downtown area. D*Face is a common fixture at Life is Beautiful and his latest piece joins several others that he created for the eclectic Las Vegas festival. The festival is known for its creative artwork and is responsible for contributing many of the murals that now flood Downtown Las Vegas with vibrant colors and unique styles. Below is one of the murals he did for Life Is Beautiful 2013.

More recently, he did the cover art for Blink-182’s album California, which features a crying woman and a skeleton sitting in a car. Street Artist and Political Activist, Shepard Fairey, Creates Downtown Mural Masterpiece

shepard fairey plaza mural downtown las vegas Street artist and political activist, Shepard Fairey, has completed his latest masterpiece, and the largest art mural in Las Vegas, on the side of the Plaza Hotel Casino in Downtown Las Vegas. The mural titled, “Cultivate Harmony,” reminds us that peace and harmony are the only way to maintain what sustains us. Fairey, known for his iconic 2008 “Hope” poster of President Obama has transformed American pop culture with his modern art and now he’s transformed the Plaza into a living piece of artwork. Fairey is one of the most recognized street artists of our generation and an icon in the art scene. Fairey began work on the building-length mural Wednesday, which is captured in a stunning high-definition video by JUSTKIDS, a creative house that conceives and promotes modern art projects. The video series details the painstaking process of planning and executing the complex mural. Shot with aerial drones and HD cameras, the video series captures Fairey and team at work high above the Plaza Hotel Casino. Watch the series below.
Covering all three panels of the hotel’s northern facade, the Plaza hotel becomes the latest Fairey creation and addition to the growing art murals found throughout Downtown Las Vegas.

Street Art in Downtown Las Vegas

Las Vegas has been a destination for Street Art over the last few years, specifically downtown. When you walk around downtown Las Vegas, you can’t miss the murals and art decorating the walls. The streets of Downtown Vegas have been a blank canvas for the world’s most influential street artists including Shepard Fairey. Shepard Fairey has been one of those influential artists in the Las Vegas art scene and a common fixture at Life is Beautiful, a one-of-a-kind festival that brings music, art, and food to downtown Las Vegas. Fairey’s art can be found throughout the Las Vegas Valley but none match the size of his latest piece at the Plaza Hotel. Using suspended scaffolding and working through gusts of wind, Fairey and his team covered the Plaza with black and red paint. They then used spray paint to color open areas to create the masterpiece on display. Unaware that a world renowned artist was transforming the Plaza Hotel, on-lookers casually passed by, not realizing the Plaza was to become the next installment in Shepard Fairey’s legendary career. Shepard Fairey isn’t the only renowned artist transforming the Plaza Hotel. English multimedia artist D*Face will bring his pop art-style, bright colors, and comic book inspired artwork to his own mural in downtown. Both murals will add color and life to an already vibrant downtown Las Vegas and Fremont Street Experience. Come see the mural today. Click here to view Plaza’s Second 21 Story Mural (by D*Face). Where to Find the Most Unique Cocktails in and Around Downtown Las Vegas

Downtown Las Vegas offers visitors the chance to experience the same excitement and nightlife that the city is known for, but with smaller crowds than the Strip. Next time you’re here, make sure to stop by these top-notch spots and grab one of their cocktails you won’t find anywhere else. Or you can just try all of them—decisions are hard.

Oscar’s Beef • Booze • Broads

KAREN HILL’S PALOMA On the second floor of the Plaza, one can find a flurry of refreshing cocktails on Oscar’s cocktail menu. These cocktails include Karen Hill’s Paloma made with tequila, Jarritos, Pamplemousse Liqueur, and lime, the Fairy Nectar comprised of gin, Lillet Blanc, Domaine de Canton and plum bitters, and the Whiskey Dreamcatcher with Maker’s Mark, elderflower, apricot and orange juice. Paying tribute to the extended run at the Plaza of the popular and critically acclaimed music and comedy show, the Scintas, Oscar’s cocktail also offers The Scinta Affair that floats a tequila infused lemon sorbet in sparkling wine.

Oak and Ivy

APPLE PIE HARVEST When it comes to the cocktail game, Oak & Ivy is a real standout. Nestled in an upgraded shipping container in the center of Downtown Las Vegas’ Container Park, Oak & Ivy’s trained mixologists combine both classic and innovative ingredients to bring patrons the ultimate cocktail experience. Their “Apple Pie Harvest” is all the rage and certainly something you won’t find anywhere else. To make the superstar staple, mixologists behind the bar combine Apple-scented Clyde Mays with Bar Keep Apple Bitters and finish it off with a pipette of Allspice Dram.  And since this is Vegas, they blowtorch a brown-sugared Granny Smith apple slice topper right in front of you as well. Side note: they also have a cult following for their Moscow Mules (but you weren’t going to get only one drink anyways, right?).

Downtown Cocktail Room

MATING CALL The Downtown Cocktail Room (or DCR as locals call it) is a Las Vegas favorite due to its ever-changing seasonal menus. Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall all feature deviations from their classic drink list, keeping locals coming back for new custom specials. One of their most unique drinks is a year-round keeper though, and comes with some unusual toppings. The “Mating Call” is a fusion of Cachaca (a sugar-cane spirit) and Yerba Mate tea, garnished with a cut of smoked cheddar and sugar-soaked blueberry decor. The mixologists at DCR surely stepped up the current sweet and savory culinary trend with this one since its ingredients combine to form a sultry smoky-sweet elixir. If this combo seems too adventurous you can always grab a friend and share one of their classic cocktail punch bowls, served exactly as the name hints.

Herbs & Rye

BLOOD AND SAND If a cocktail menu organized by time period and a generous set of happy hours (both dinner and drink) pique your interest, then Herbs and Rye should be top on your Las Vegas bucket list. The restaurant’s “Blood and Sand” cocktail is listed under the Prohibition era, but there’s nothing secret about it—since it’s lit on fire before being served. The cocktail’s ingredients are listed on the menu as scotch, cherry heering, sweet vermouth, and orange juice with some zest—a combination sure to please even after the main display. Speaking of their happy hour—half price steaks? Order up.

Park on Fremont

DERBY BREAKFAST CLUB Park on Fremont is the perfect place to catch breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They’ve got drinks to pair with their food for every meal. Shoot for an AM dining time and experience what many would say is their most unique doozy all day: the “Derby Breakfast Club”. Served in a mason jar, this drink is a twist on the classic Bloody Mary using bacon-infused vodka, hickory smoke, and fresh house-made Mary mix. What makes the drink really unique though is its toppings—a piece of perfect bacon and an entire pickled egg. Make reservations for the porch ahead of time and get a great view of Fremont Street while sipping and eating your drink.

Velveteen Rabbit

GREEN BITCH Velveteen Rabbit is a cocktail bar featuring classic vintage decor, but their drinks are anything but old. The owners are two entrepreneurial sisters who are also expert mixologists. Their “Green Bitch” cocktail features a set of very unusual ingredients including Green Chartreuse, Strega, lemon, celery, egg white, simple syrup, and curry bitters. The components of the drink were carefully selected to offset the French herbal liqueur, creating a mixture that combines to form a perfectly balanced drink. PS: If you’re looking for a pick-me-up after the Green Bitch try the fluffy “Dorian Grey” – it’s an Earl-Grey infused vodka cocktail and comes with a shortbread biscuit.

Vanguard Lounge

TENNESSEE ROSE Vanguard brings a perfect combination of superb mixologists and guest DJs to Fremont Street. This has made this lounge a favorite for locals and tourists alike. The space is decorated in super trendy industrial chic, which many consider a nice break from the numerous themed bars in the neighborhood. Their top-of-the-menu “Tennessee Rose” is a sure favorite for its whiskey flavor and sweet undertones- a.k.a. a combination of Bonnie Rose Apple Spiced Whiskey, Lime Juice, Sumac Grenadine, and Maple Syrup. If you’ve got steady enough hands, make sure to grab a the unique drink and head to Vanguard’s dance floor—where music and cocktail combine to form bliss.

Classic Jewel

THE HEAT Chandeliers and a glass bar wall may decorate Classic Jewel, but the real stunners are the drinks. “The Heat” lives up to its name as a blend of Sauza Hornitos Reposado, chili and jalapeños, sweet agave nectar, orange juice, and lime juice. Luckily, Classic Jewel’s mixologist allows you can choose the heat of your peppers on a scale of 0-2 before creating the drink, depending on how brave you are. One of the best parts though? If you really like “The Heat” you can even live above Classic Jewel (since it’s located at the base of a residential high rise).

Atomic Liquors

PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME Atomic Liquor is a staple in Las Vegas, mostly due its history of famous Vegas clientele and long-gone rooftop mushroom cloud shows—courtesy of a former government bomb-testing area a mere 50 miles away. While you may have missed the window for that explosive experience by half a decade or so, Atomic Liquor is still sending shockwaves through Vegas today for their stellar cocktails. Their “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” mix is quite a crowd pleaser and unlike other bars, actually includes the title ingredients and not just flavor. The drink is a perfect blend of rye whiskey, sloe gin, blackberry, and peanut butter served in a mason jar. It’s exactly as mouthwatering as it sounds. Just like mom used to make, right?

What to Know About Getting Around Vegas

Downtown is probably the most pedestrian-friendly area of Vegas. If you are planning on visiting any of the exciting attractions elsewhere in the city, however, you will likely want to consider your transportation option ahead of time. Save yourself the stress of finding the right transportation when you get here by learning more about what options are available to you and how to use them to ensure you have a great trip. Here is what you need to know about getting around Las Vegas.

Ride Sharing

Chances are, you have already used one of the massively popular ride-sharing services now available. Both Uber and Lyft are now available in Vegas, but with a few extra considerations specific to operations throughout the city. Although both services are now allowed at McCarran International Airport, many of the resorts along the Strip have regulations about where users can use the services on property.

A photo posted by Uber (@uber) on

For example, an Uber may not be allowed to simply drive to the front of your resort and pick you up, but instead, may have to meet you in a less-visible area. Another interesting point to remember is that prices surge during peak times—meaning you may be better off using an alternate method of transportation during these times if you are looking to save money.

Taxis & Rental Cars

If you aren’t big on public transport or are worried about being able to catch your Uber, you can always take a taxi. Most hotels have a loading area where you can easily grab a cab and be on your way. It’s important to remember that taxis are prohibited from picking up on the side of the road, meaning you will have to call a taxi if that’s how you are planning on getting back to your resort. Cab rides in Vegas are notoriously expensive, so you may want to consider splitting your ride with someone else to keep costs down. If you feel like you want to be a bit more independent on your trip to Vegas, you may want to consider renting a car. Car rental is also a great option for visitors who want to explore more of the city, or even areas slightly outside of the city, like the Grand Canyon, or Mount Charleston. If you do decide to rent a car, remember that parking can be tricky to navigate. You may want to so dome research and make plans ahead if you are planning on parking in Downtown Las Vegas.

Public Transport

Opting for public transport is a great way to get around the city without spending a ton of money. The Deuce is a popular option for tourists and locals alike because it runs from Downtown Vegas to the Mandalay Bay, or the length of the entire Las Vegas Strip. The flashy gold double-decker runs 24 hours a day, stops about every quarter mile, and costs $6 for 2 hours with options to purchase a pass for the entire day. getting-around-vegas-the-deuce Photo courtesy of Eric Chan via Flickr. CC/BY Another great public transport option is The Strip & Downtown Express, or SDX. The SDX is able to provide users with faster service by offering limited stops on both north and southbound routes. This is perfect if you need to make it somewhere, like reservations for dinner at Oscar’s Steakhouse, and don’t have time to waste. The SDX runs daily from 9 a.m. to midnight, with stops about every 15 minutes, and costs the same as The Deuce. The best way to ensure you don’t have to deal with the hassle of getting around the city is to book Downtown Vegas suites close to the activities you’re interested in. You will also want to ensure the resort you’re staying at has plenty of great dining options and other amenities to minimize having to navigate around when you don’t need to.

The Best Ways to Relax in Downtown Las Vegas

Downtown Las Vegas offers plenty of excitement for guests to enjoy; however, there is also a broad range of relaxing activities in DTLV to soak in. If you’re seeking a Vegas experience that’s fun and low-key, the downtown area won’t disappoint. Check out our picks for the best ways to relax in downtown Las Vegas.

Attend Second Saturday at Emergency Arts

You’ve probably heard of First Friday — an incredible art festival held downtown on the first Friday of every month, but you might not know about Second Saturday. Held at Emergency Arts on the second Saturday of each month, this event is a quieter celebration of art and is an opportunity to socialize with other art enthusiasts.

See a Show

Downtown Las Vegas is also a great place to see a show. For an evening of unforgettable entertainment, see The Scintas at the Plaza. This performing group is popular with fans of all ages due to their unique brand of variety-show-style comedy entertainment. The Scintas have been performing in Vegas since 2001, and the reason they have been able to stand the test of time is because of the unparalleled passion they have for putting on a great show. At their show in the iconic Plaza showroom, guests can expect to see impressions (keep an eye out for Bruno Mars), live music from the full band (you’ll love the horn section), both classic and non-traditional singing numbers, hilarious banter, and much more. No two shows are alike — so even if you’ve seen The Scintas before, you’re guaranteed something new at the next show.

Indulge Your Love of Books

The Writer’s Block is located on Fremont St. and is a book lover’s paradise. Browse through imported stationery, one-of-a-kind treasures, and plenty of books. This establishment even has its own bookstore bunny that guests can scratch behind the ears. The Writer’s Block is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day except Sunday when they close at 6 p.m.

Get Back to Nature

Visit Sixth St. and Carson to see the first “parklet” in downtown Las Vegas. The parklet is small, yet still serves as a green oasis in the concrete jungle, offering guests and locals a breath of fresh air in the midst of the city. Visitors to the parklet are shielded from the sun; take a break at the table and read the amazing facts engraved on the seats. It’s a mini-escape that lets you unwind without leaving the city.

Take a Stroll to See the Street Art

Downtown Las Vegas has a thriving art scene; in addition to its galleries and boutiques, there’s plenty of street art to see as well. Put on your most comfortable walking shoes and head to Stewart and N. 6th to see a depiction of a blood-spurting horned lizard, then check out the array of murals in the vicinity.

Sip Coffee at The Beat

The Beat isn’t just a coffee shop. Although the java there is excellent, this establishment also serves as a vinyl records shop. You’ll feel as though you’ve stepped through time when you enter this laid-back cafe. This Fremont Street establishment also showcases local musicians and is open to patrons of all ages.

Have Dinner at Oscar’s

A leisurely meal is certainly a relaxing pursuit and that’s exactly what you get at Oscar’s — a steakhouse located right at the Plaza. Oscar’s steakhouse in downtown Vegas serves up a tempting array of appetizers, entrees, and of course, an extensive selection of wine, beer, and cocktails. The elegant décor and fantastic American cuisine make Oscar’s a Vegas legend. Although these activities are certainly something to consider, you may simply decide to relax in the plush indulgence of your downtown Vegas suite. No matter how you decide to relax, you can easily do it in downtown Vegas. Though the city has a reputation for exhilarating fun, you’ll find that relaxing in DTLV can be incredibly enjoyable, too.

Your Guide to the First Friday Festival in Downtown Vegas

Downtown Las Vegas isn’t just about bright lights and casino excitement. Although DTLV is legendary for its neon lights and historic gaming establishments, the area also offers its fair share of arts and culture. The amazing art scene is due in large part to First Friday — a free art festival held on the first Friday of every month that’s been going strong since its 2002 debut. Today, First Friday welcomes over 20,000 guests and is the largest event of its kind in Las Vegas. First Friday is popular with locals and visitors alike; some guests to downtown Las Vegas travel here specifically for this event. Here is everything you need to know about this eccentric event.

First Friday Transportation and Parking

First Friday is held in the Arts District of downtown Las Vegas. The spacious district also referred to as 18b, is home to a variety of galleries and boutiques that participate in this highly popular event. It’s so popular, in fact, that reaching the festival by car can sometimes be a challenge. Consider using a parking garage, such as the free lot at 7th and Ogden – just make sure to arrive early at this lot to get a space. Paid parking areas are also an option, such as the Fremont St. Experience lot on 4th and Carson, or The Plaza Hotel & Casino lot on Main and Carson. Royal Rewards members may qualify for free parking. If possible, walking to First Friday is a hassle-free option, although crowds can get heavy at times.

The First Friday Experience

First Friday is an art event; however, guests also enjoy incredible food and live entertainment. The event is a great opportunity for both visitors and locals to discover talented local artists. Thanks to this venue, pedestrian traffic in the downtown area has grown by leaps and bounds. First Friday has also helped promote the fantastic small businesses in the district. Dress comfortably — think outdoor festival wear — and prepare for lots of walking. If you need a break, there are ample cafes and restaurants where you can rest your feet and grab a bite. A piece of art purchased at First Friday is a great souvenir to commemorate your time in Vegas.

Area Attractions

The Arts District spans 18 blocks; here, you’ll find art galleries and so much more. Visit Glam Factory Vintage on Colorado for incredible vintage clothing. If its home décor you’re after, stop by Inside Style, a boutique specializing in interior décor. You’re likely to work up an appetite at First Friday — luckily, there are plenty of palate-pleasing downtown Vegas food options available. Casa Don Juan serves up authentic Mexican cuisine, and for fusion fare and cocktails, head to Mingo’s. There are even hair salons and tattoo parlors in this eclectic district.

First Friday: Something for Everyone

Although there’s nothing wrong with relaxing in your plush downtown Vegas hotel suite, First Friday is a fantastic opportunity to get outside and mingle with guests and locals. You don’t even need to be an art enthusiast to enjoy this event because there’s something to appeal to everyone! Although you’re sure to discover art that appeals to you at this event, there’s plenty of food, beverages, and street entertainment to enjoy as well. When visiting Vegas, attending First Friday is part of a well-rounded experience.

About the Plaza’s Newest Resident Act: The Scintas

Few Vegas shows have the wherewithal to survive the constant evolution of the city and still come out on top. The Scintas have done just that. With injections of fresh material, an energetic dynamic between group members, and a new residency at the Plaza, The Scintas are on track to give downtown visitors an exciting show they are not soon to forget.

The Beginning

Frankie Scinta began performing at the age of 9 and instantly knew he wanted to spend his life on the stage. “Once I heard that applause that was it, I knew that’s what I was going to do for the rest of my life,” said Frankie. The Scintas formed and began performing in their hometown of Buffalo, New York before relocating to Las Vegas in 2000. the-scintas-live-at-the-plaza The group started at the Hilton where their show was much different than what you see today. “It was my brother, my sister, myself, and our drummer,” said Frankie, “we had no band, no horn section, no rhythm section, we were the band!”

Vegas Then & Now

While performing at the Hilton, The Scintas quickly gained recognition because their show was perfectly suited for Vegas. “It was an incredible time in Vegas because there were other shows,” said Frankie, “there were other resident headliners here that you could see who were performers — not just comedians, but entertainers.” And, as Frankie explained, those entertainers had a strong relationship with the hotel they were performing at, something The Scintas are looking to replicate during their time at the Plaza. “This, at the Plaza, it’s a marriage between the Plaza and The Scintas,” said Frankie, “and so far, it’s working out very well!” The relationship between The Scintas and the Plaza also aims to bring back aspects of what Frankie refers to as vintage Vegas. “What I really miss about vintage Vegas is that every hotel had a headliner,” said Frankie, “you could go to the MGM, and you would know Tom Jones was going to be there, and people made a night of it.”

To encourage the idea of a full night out on the town, visitors can indulge in a fine meal at Oscar’s Steakhouse before heading down to the plush showroom to enjoy The Scintas.

During the show, every member of the audience is then invited back up to Oscar’s Steakhouse for a cocktail and the chance to meet and chat with the performers. This is another nod to keeping the vibe of vintage Vegas alive at the Plaza. “That’s what entertainers did in the old days,” said Frankie. Although it may seem like much of the show’s emphasis is on returning to old Vegas, the show truly offers something for everyone.

“Our show offers those who are between 30 and 70 somewhere to go where they can have an emotional connection to a show and can leave with a feeling,” said Frankie. After all, where else can you see Michael Jackson, Dean Martin, Bruno Mars, and Mick Jagger in one place?

About the Show

Although The Scintas have performed at a variety of venues in Vegas, while watching the show, it’s easy to see the entire cast feels like they are at home at the Plaza. “We have an incredible showroom manager here, he’s taken us in like family,” said Frankie, “we are like one big family and I really think this is one of the few showrooms in Vegas that’s happening.” Before signing with the Plaza, The Scintas had other offers, but knew it had to be the Plaza after seeing the showroom. “We are in an iconic showroom, they don’t even make them like this anymore,” said Frankie, “this is where the icons performed!” The dynamic between the members of the Scintas creates a remarkable balance that guides you through the show. The performer of the group is, of course, Frankie, who feeds on the energy of the audience and banter with drummer and “honorary Scinta” Peter O’Donnell. The comedic relief and relaxed vibe come from Frankie’s brother, Joe, whose spot on impressions are so over the top you can’t help but laugh. The newest member of the group, Janien Valentine, does a classical opera number that is sure to have every member of the audience on their feet. the-scintas-janien-valentine-live-at-the-plaza “Nothing is contrived and every night is different because every audience is different,” said Frankie, “we perform to everybody sitting there because if they came to see a show, we’re going to give them everything in our hearts.” The show also features a moving tribute to veterans, something Frankie considers very important to the group. “We walk the streets today free in America like no other country, because of every veteran,” said Frankie, “whether they lost everything or nothing.” If you are looking to see comedy, or impressions, or want to enjoy some of the best live music complete with an incredible horn section that will wow you; The Scintas has it all. The show has something for everyone–something Frankie says he’s very proud of. “I don’t like to do this, I don’t love to do it, I live to do it,” said Frankie, “it’s never been a job for me.” The Scintas perform at the legendary Plaza showroom two weekends per month and hope to start eventually playing every weekend. 2 Exciting New Exhibits Opening at The Plaza

Last year, the Plaza opened a special gallery full of some of the most iconic sports memorabilia. The Las Vegas Club Gallery at the Plaza was filled with hundreds of sports-related items available for purchase by the public. The exhibit was a huge success, with many of the items quickly bought by eager sports enthusiasts and collectors. In response to the overwhelming success of the Plaza’s sports memorabilia exhibit, the Plaza is doing it again. This time, with two exciting new exhibits that pay homage to the hotel’s old Vegas roots. These exhibits are an excellent way to showcase the history of not only Downtown Las Vegas, but also the unique role the Plaza Hotel & Casino has played in shaping the area into what it is today. Whether you are a local or visitor, the Plaza’s new displays are sure to give you a distinct perspective on the rich and interesting history and culture of Downtown Las Vegas.

Jerry Misko

In a style true to the artistic and creative vibe that flows through downtown, the Plaza’s first new exhibit will be one from famed local artist, Jerry Misko. The exhibit, which opened on Jan. 15, features a collection of Misko’s edition prints accompanied by one-of-a-kind paintings of classic Vegas neon signs. Misko, a Las Vegas native, has collaborated on projects with some of the most recognizable names in the city, including the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the Neon Museum, First Friday, and even the city of Las Vegas. These collaborations, combined with 12 years of experience as a practicing artist in Las Vegas have given Misko’s art a distinctly Vegas personality perfect for the Las Vegas Club Gallery. Those looking to take a piece of Vegas nostalgia home with them will be able to purchase Misko’s retro-meets-modern interpretations at the exhibit.

Union Plaza Then and Now

The second exhibit, which opens Feb. 4, is an exciting look at the evolution of the Plaza throughout the past five decades. The free exhibit, “Union Plaza Then and Now,” offers guests a rare look into the history of the Plaza through artifacts, photos, and videos. The exhibit is one of many from the Museum of Gaming History, a non-profit educational project of The Casino Chip & Gaming Token Collectors Club, Inc. that aims to preserve gaming history. Since it opened in 1971, the Plaza has cemented itself as a cultural icon, not only in Vegas but throughout the world. The exhibit aims to explore this rich and iconic history by showcasing the evolution of the Plaza. “Union Plaza Then and Now” will feature over 150 artifacts including chips, dice, ashtrays, postcards and even a unique lightbox display of a rare shot glass collection. Museum-of-gaming-history-plaza-hotel Guests will also have the opportunity to explore the history of the Plaza through a series of photographs that chronicles the progress made by the hotel from its groundbreaking to present day. For an even broader perspective of the transformation of both the Plaza and Downtown Las Vegas, guests will be treated to a 30-minute video about the hotel’s place in the historical development of downtown. A special grand opening of both exhibits will be held on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. The museum will be open to the public from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Whether you are a seasoned Las Vegas native with a broad understanding of the history of the city, or someone looking for a fun and unique activity downtown, you are sure to love the one-of-a-kind insights garnered from both exhibits.

Everything You Need to Know about Downtown Las Vegas’ Art District

A photo posted by Las Vegas (@vegas) on

Downtown Las Vegas is one of the most culturally and historically rich areas in the entire city. One of the many reasons both tourists and locals alike love this area of the city is the Downtown Arts District. This eclectic area, officially known as 18b Arts District is well known as the hub of the art scene in Las Vegas. The area is full of art and working galleries, antique and other unique shops and restaurants and unique lounges. Only a short walk from Fremont Street, the 18b Arts District is the perfect place to go for a different side of Vegas.

History

The area originally gained its reputation as an art location when a family owned and operated business, Desert Art Supplies was established. Several more art based businesses and museums opened in the area throughout the years, including The Arts Factory, Enigma Garden Café and The Contemporary Arts Center. The area was officially created in 1998 and was named for the 18 block zone set aside for the district. Although the area is larger today, it was initially bounded by Hoover Avenue, Colorado Avenue, Las Vegas Boulevard, Commerce Street and 4th Street.

Goals

The initial goal of the area was to provide the otherwise dull area with a unique identity apart from what you would find on the Strip and Fremont Street. The ideal mission was to inspire creativity in everyone who visited and lived in the area. Today the area is managed by the 18b Las Vegas Arts District Neighborhood Association and strives to encourage art in general. They also make large efforts to enhance current and new businesses in the district by creating growth and promoting enhanced pedestrian traffic.

First Friday

Now well known as the premier art event in the city, First Friday was first established in October 2002 and was attended by around 300 people. First Friday is the largest arts and culture event in the city, held on the first Friday of every month and hosting up to 20,000 visitors. The uniquely fun event brings in a substantial amount of foot traffic, allowing visitors to mingle the galleries, shops, restaurants and food trucks in the area. This is great for many local and upcoming artists and other vendors to gain recognition and sell some of their original artwork.

Preview Thursday

Held the first Thursday of every month, Preview Thursday was established as a scaled down version of First Friday. The reasoning behind this, is to allow more serious art buyers with the chance to beat the large crowds and potentially buy anything they are interested in. Preview Thursday is a great, more upscale way to enjoy the offerings of the Art District.

Must Visit Places

If you find yourself in need of a great meal while exploring the Art District, stroll over to Casa Don Juan for the best authentic Mexican food you will find anywhere. This family owned restaurant offers all of your favorites including carnitas, tortas, tacos, fajitas and much more.

A photo posted by Makers & Finders (@makerslv) on

For anyone in need of an afternoon pick me up, or smaller food offerings will love everything at Makers & Finders Coffee. This coffee house serves up one-of-a-kind hand brewed favorites such as lavender infused lattes and small tapa like dishes including arepas, empanadas and shrimp ceviche. Head over to the Velveteen Rabbit for unique handcrafted cocktails in an atmosphere that perfectly embodies the spirit of the Art District. One of the best places to visit if you find yourself in the Arts District is the Arts Factory. Started in 1997, it is a warehouse full of a wide variety of different kinds of art including contemporary and traditional. Also make sure to find some of the many different street art murals in the area for a unique look at some of the ever-changing community art pieces. Finally, be sure to take a stroll down the First Street Art Trail as a way experience a unique variety of public art.
